Where we work

MEAC is based in Kajiado district, Ngong division, and Intashat location, in Kimuka Sub-location. You can see our location here. We work primarily in local areas, and send volunteers to neighbouring towns in the region.

One of the factors for this is that our region is largely unaffected by the tourism boom in Kenya. Many regions of Kenya, particularly around national parks, have experienced mass tourism, resulting in large funds for local communities to develop basic resource management strategies. These include water pumps and medical facilities.

Our region has largely been avoided by tourists, and so many resources are not available to local communities.

MEAC would like to see a complimentary balance of tourism and economic growth in the Maasai community. Tourism can sometimes leave a devistating aftermath on local communities, sometimes even resulting in communities abandoning their culture for a more capital approach to life. We do not want to see this happen here.

However, we do believe that with proper management, a small tourism industry in our region could potentially grow our economy, supporting locals through employment opportunities, while still making it possible for the Maasai people here to live traditionally.

Volunteers to Kimuka can work in many fields, and so we place volunteers in local orphanages, schools, medical facilities, and we can organise for volunteers to assist in sustainable development for the community.

Kimuka is a beautiful region, and we are quite happy to show guests to our region many of the wonderful features, such as untouched caves, extinct volcanoes, and the famous Ngong hills, where Karen Blixen's lover is buried.

Please contact us to discuss in more detail where specific volunteers can work.

"MEAC is so proud to be a community based project. Our greatest asset is definitely knowing the people we are helping, and a passion that comes naturally from knowing we are helping our friends, neighbours, families and tribe."
